Whether you’ve just acquired your dog or cat, or you’ve been together for years, we will help you keep your pet healthy and happy by providing preventative healthcare, identifying signs of disease or discomfort, and monitoring and managing chronic diseases.
Vaccines are essential for preventing diseases in cats and dogs, as well as some diseases that can be transmitted to people.
Our doctors choose which vaccines are right for you and your pet based on his or her breed, age, health status, and lifestyle. Below is a list of the vaccinations we offer; more information about each of these diseases and vaccines will be discussed at your first visit.
We consider the following vaccinations optional and given to dogs whose lifestyles put them at risk for the following diseases:
Lyme disease
Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) (required by certain boarding facilities)
Puppies and Kittens
At your kitten or puppy’s first visit, the veterinarian will discuss medical and dietary history, perform a full physical examination, administer necessary vaccines and run a fecal test for intestinal parasites. For kittens, a blood test for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) will be discussed and recommended if not already preformed. We will also address spay / neuter, preventative care, feeding, microchips, pet insurance and other topics.
Adult Pet Wellness
An annual physical exam is the first and most important step in providing your pet with a long, healthy, and happy life. We understand that each patient needs an individualized medical program, and we pride ourselves on taking the time to discuss a plan that most benefits both you and your pet’s health.
Wellness visits include a full comprehensive physical exam of your pet from head to toe performed by a veterinarian. They also include counseling on:
- Routine lab work (blood tests, urine tests, etc.) to monitor for any changes
- Recommended core and non-core vaccines
- Flea, tick, and heart worm prevention
- Gastrointestinal parasite testing (fecal exams) and deworming
- Diet and weight management, for example some grain free diets may cause heart disease.
- Behavior, activity and exercise
- When to spay or neuter if not already preformed
- And any additional questions you may have!
It can be very alarming when one of your beloved pets becomes ill. We offer problem and emergency exams during business hours to better help you during this difficult time. We have full in-house laboratory diagnostics, Digital in-house x-ray, and offer hospitalization when necessary.
We recommend yearly heartworm and tick disease tests for dogs based on the American Heartworm Society (AHS) guidelines (https://www.heartwormsociety.org/), and once-twice yearly fecal tests for intestinal parasites, as dictated by CAPC, the Companion Animal Parasite Council (http://www.capcvet.org/). We will also recommend prescribing a monthly heartworm, intestinal parasite, flea and tick preventative for dogs.We see a lot of tick disease in dogs in San Diego – so make sure your furry friends are protected!
